Basics of farming

There are few basics to be learned before understanding the farming. Let me put together a glossary for you to learn that basics.

Thundu (துண்டு) – A piece  or block of land.

Varapu (வரப்பு ) – A divider which divides the piece of land (thundu)

Vaaikaal (வாய்கால் ) – A shallow tunnel which is used for water passage.

Saal (சால்) – A ploughing method. For some crops they do cross plough (குறுக்கு சால்)

Sedai (சேடை ) –  When a land is filled with water after ploughing.

Karambu (கரம்பு ) –  When a land is empty or barn, then it is called Karambu. Cattle would graze in Karambu land.

Katti Mutti (கட்டி முட்டி ) –   When soil is a lump form. We also call it is as soil cakes. This has to be minimized for many crop cultivation.

Andai (ஆண்டை கழித்தல் ) – Making the soil uniform using hand tools. This is done for certain crops to make the soil even.

Naanthaangaal (நாந்தாங்கால்) – A piece of land which has lots of paddy germination plants together. Later it is moved to bigger land. Which is planted in bunches with equal gaps.

Madai (மடை) – A process of water flow, which is used to open and close from the vaaikaal to Thundu. Usage: We have turned on the madai for this thundu,
